Graphs of Algebra FunctionsThe graphs of various functions are presented that are commonly found in algebra. There are many more types of graphs found in math, however. Linear Equation or Line FunctionThe most basic function is the line. In equation form, it is y = mx + b where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept. Quadratic EquationThe graph of a quadratic equation is called a parabola. The roots of a quadratic equation is where the parabola intersects the x-axis. Cubic EquationThe cubic equation has a degree of three. Polynomials that have an even degree are even functions. Those that have an odd degree are odd functions. Rational FunctionThe graph of a rational function has a vertical asymptote which the graph approaches but does not touch. There may also be horizontal asymptotes. Absolute Value FunctionThe graph of an absolute value funtion has a sharp corner where it changes direction. Square Root Function or RadicalThe graph of the square root function or radical increases rapidly at first then more slowly. Exponential FunctionThe graph of an exponential function increases more rapidly than a polynomial as it approaches infinity. Logarithmic FunctionThe graph of a logarithmic function increases rapidly then increases at a slower pace. The logarithm is the inverse of the exponential function. |
